Taught by Laura Terry: Physical Therapist/Yoga Instructor
In this 2 hour workshop, you will learn how to protect your shoulders from injury and arthritic changes. We will briefly discuss and look at the anatomy of the shoulder joint and the surrounding musculature as well as common muscular and postural imbalances that can lead to injury and pain.
We will perform simple exercises to strengthen muscles that support the shoulder joint that are typically weak (as compared to opposing muscle groups). We will also learn how to relax and gently stretch muscles around the shoulders that are typically tight or tense.
By finding this balance of stability and mobility around the shoulder, you will experience more freedom of movement, feel more stable in your upper body, experience less neck pain, and be able to prevent injuries that arise from muscular imbalance, such as rotator cuff tendonitis, nerve compression, upper back and shoulder blade pain. This will be a complement to your existing exercise routine, sport or activity, but will be easily woven into what you are currently doing for your fitness and self care.
A short exercise routine that you can perform at home will be provided, so that you don’t have to try to recall the nuances of the exercises after the workshop is over.
